News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Three Newport teens were arrested at gunpoint Monday, November 9, after leading a sheriff's deputy on a chase thorough the streets of Sisters.
According to Deschutes County Sherrif's Office reports, a deputy spotted the teens, reported as runaways, at the intersection of Spruce Street and Hood Avenue. The deputy recognized their black Jeep Cherokee as a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Lincoln County.
The deputy circled the block, lost sight of the Jeep, then picked it up again and dropped in behind it. The 15-year-old driver of the Jeep "spun the tires" and took off, according to the deputy.
The teens wound through city streets in an effort to elude pursuit, according to the deputy.
The deputy finally got the Jeep pulled over in front of Sisters Middle School, on Locust Street near the intersection of Main Avenue. Two state troopers and an off-duty reserve deputy also responded to the scene.
The deputy ordered the teens to come out of the vehicle one at a time at gunpoint. Each was arrested and taken away in handcuffs.
According to sheriff's office reports, the teens - two girls and a boy - were each charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and attempting to elude a police officer. The female driver was also cited for failure to obey traffic controls, reckless driving and driving without a license.
The Jeep was allegedly stolen from the driver's parents.
The arresting deputy told The Nugget that each of the teens said they were having problems at home. They reportedly wandered north and east from Newport, going through Hood River and The Dalles and turning south to Bend. The deputy said the teens headed east toward Idaho before turning back and coming into Sisters.
