Chamber explores economic development

The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce has formed a committee on economic development.

According to chamber manager Mardyth Peterson, the move is designed to complement the efforts of the Sisters Community Action Team (CAT) to promote the economic growth and stability of the Sisters area.

At the February 2 chamber board of directors meeting, board member Bob Grooney presented a proposal to establish an economic development committee as part of the overall goals and strategies of the CAT.

Grooney was recently elected to the CAT board, with the chief responsibility of heading up the economic goals for the action plan.

The economic development committee will be comprised of chamber members from every sector of the business community. The committee will include representatives from city, county and the school district.

The committee will attempt to advance Sisters as a place where locals can shop by diversifying and expanding existing businesses and assist in the expansion and/or recruitment of compatible, environmentally sensitive light industries and businesses.

The chamber and CAT hope to ensure that development of industrial land will benefit the community, diversify the economy of the community to become less dependent on tourism, create more local family wage jobs, contribute to the development of a year-round economy and attract cooperative businesses that contribute to other's success.
