News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
A pair of nasty wrecks on Highway 20 last week sent several motorists to the hospital.
Two vehicles collided in icy conditions west of Suttle Lake on Thursday, April 8. According to Oregon State Police reports, Maurice Hickman of Redmond was headed westbound in a Toyota pickup truck when he saw a Mazda pickup truck driven by Lynn Giender of Prineville fishtailing and sliding into his lane.
Hickman reported that there was nowhere to go to evade a collision and the Mazda pickup slammed into the front end of the Toyota.
State police reported that all involved were transported from the scene by Camp Sherman ambulance.
Police reported that Hickman's passenger suffered a possible broken leg and a back injury.
The driver suffered only minor injuries.
Giender reportedly was uninjured, but the passenger in the Mazda may have broken some ribs and suffered some lacerations, according to OSP reports.
A second wreck occurred on Saturday, April 10, when, according to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, an eastbound Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Juliann Evans of Tualatin crossed the center line at a curve near Black Butte Ranch and hit the trailer of a westbound semi-truck.
According to sheriff's office reports, the Cavalier went back across the highway and landed on its wheels about 15 feet off the roadway.
The semi-truck driver was uninjured, deputies reported. Evans was transported to St. Charles Medical Center by Black Butte Ranch ambulance in stable condition after emergency crews extricated her from the vehicle.
According to sheriff's office reports, a partially full bottle of Black Velvet whiskey was found in Evans' car, but a deputy reported that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
Deputies cited Evans for failing to drive in lane, failure to carry proof of insurance and having an open container of alcohol in the car.
