News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Friends of the Sisters Library honored Cal and Marsha Allen as Family of the Year at its Monday, April 12, meeting.
Cal was chairman of Friends of the Library for two years and spearheaded the successful "Bucks for Books campaign.
Last year he led the group through three elections supporting better library funding and formation of the new Deschutes Library District (which starts July 1).
Cal and Marsha worked tirelessly on the telephone committee to get out the library vote during last year's elections. These elections each carried a better than 60 percent favorable vote and better than a 50 percent voter response in the Sisters area.
"I can't think of anybody who could have run these campaigns as well as Cal Allen did, said Arnold Funai, present chairman of Friends of the Library.
Marsha Allen sets up the theme displays at the entrance to the Sisters Library. Each month she puts together a different seasonal or Friends of the Library speaker's topic for the display case.
The Allens' have lived in Sisters for almost five years. Cal graduated from Cornell University and was a Chevron oil company executive for 35 years before coming to Sisters. Marsha's career was as a child development expert and she has advised over 300 school districts in California and some in Oregon in these matters.
