News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
A search and rescue party found Roger Perkins, 77, near his home northeast of Sisters after he apparently spent the night in the open May 8-9.
Perkins' wife called sheriff's deputies at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning, after disovering that her husband was not in the house. She had reportedly seen him last at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, Perkins was described as frail and weak. Based on that description and the 20-degree temperature, a sheriff's deputy alerted search and rescue.
A 10-member search party located Perkins on the edge of a canyon about 150 yards from his home at 6:45 a.m. According to sheriff's office reports, Perkins had fallen and injured himself. He was not dressed for the weather and was clearly suffering the effects of his overnight exposure, according to Sergeant Wayne Inman.
A Sisters-Camp Sherman ambulance crew transported Perkins to Central Oregon District Hospital where, despite his ordeal, he was listed in good condition.
