News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Metolius River cleanup will kick off Saturday, May 15, at 9 a.m. at the Camp Sherman Store.
Those wishing to participate are encouraged to wear hiking/work boots and bring gloves, a lunch and water, and a tool to pick up trash.
According Steve Couche, event coordinator for the Sisters Ranger District, the river looks pretty good, but thereare always opportunities to pick up litter. Couche says that people who find a recreation site clean are much more likely to leave it clean when they depart.
People who show up at the store will be split into teams and given a stretch of the river and trash bags and sent on their way.
The cleanup is expected to last until about 2 p.m., at which time the particpants will gather at the Camp Sherman store and unload their trash into waiting dumpsters.
A tally of the approximate weight and make-up of the trash will be sent to the national headquarters of the river cleanup campaign at American Rivers.
