Meltdown leads to food giveaway

Caroline Lucas, the new owner of Sisters Market, made the best of a bad situation last week when a large freezer defrosted, leaving about $1,000 worth of food in danger of going to waste.

Lucas contacted the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank and Kiwanians David Hiller and Cal Allen responded, collecting about 75 pounds worth of frozen dinners.

"We couldn't take it all because we've only got one refrigerator," Hiller said.

According to Hiller, Chris Anderson, who manages the food bank, distributed the TV dinners to families on Thursday, June 17, and families that came to the food bank for regular distribution on Friday also received the dinners.

The St. Vincent DePaul Society collected more foodstuffs for its food distribution operation. Lucas reported that Three Sisters Fellowship also collected donations.

According to Lucas, the freezer went down after a repairman left a refrigerant cap off and the chemical drained out. The damages will be covered by insurance, Lucas said.

Hiller noted that the Sisters Rodeo Association also donated salad fixings that were distributed on Monday, June 14.

The Kiwanis food Bank is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the corner of Oak Street and Main Avenue. It distributes food to qualified recipients, based on a needs analysis.

According to Hiller, the food bank takes donations of food or cash.

"We have a lot of families in Sisters that give a regular monthly check," he noted.

Canned fruits, pasta, spaghetti sauce and boxed macaroni and cheese are preferred donation items, Hiller said.
