News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
School just let out for the summer, but for some Sisters students it has started right back up again. Summer school classes began Tuesday, July 6.
For the first week 20 to 34 high school students will meet at Sisters Middle School for classes while the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show "Quilters Affair" occupies the high school. After that, the stud- ents will meet in the high school library.
Some students need summer school to catch up; others use it to get a head start on next year.
"There's a number of kids who need to take classes to make up for an English or a social studies class that they failed," said high school counselor Charlie Kanzig.
Kanzig and Janice Quiros will teach the summer school curriculum.
Some students take a careers class so they have a more open schedule in the fall.
"Kids want to take it in summer so they can put an elective in its place during the regular school year," Kanzig said.
The careers class offers students the chance to identify their interests and strengths for future work and taining in job-seeking skills.
The idea, according to Kanzig, is to "get them on the road toward exploring possibilities for their future."
Students may earn up to one full credit in the summer school program.
Classes run for six weeks, four hours a day. Tuition is set at $75 per half credit.
According to Kanzig, there is federal money available for qualified students whose tuition is then waived on the basis of need.
According to Kanzig, summer school works very well, especially for students who have fallen behind.
"It's a pretty nice situation," Kanzig said. "They get all the attention they need. Most see the value of getting back on an even keel. It's an opportunity for them not to be behind anymore."
Kanzig said that summer school enrollment will remain open through the first week of classes. For more information call the school district office at 549-8521.
