Engineer hunts hookups

Terry Williams is visiting every residential and commercial building in Sisters to figure out how they will eventually hook up to Sisters' sewer system.

Williams, an employee of HGE, Inc., the engineering firm that is designing the system, will identify where the sewer lines come out of the buildings so the engineers can plan the most efficient way to lay out the pipes for the system.

"Once this is down, they'll know where they're actually going to run the mains," said city public works director Gary Frazee.

"Every situation is different," he noted.

Some buildings will hook up to main lines on major streets, some will run to side streets and some mains may run up alleys.

Frazee expects the survey to take a couple of months to complete.

Williams is also identifying the location of septic tanks where he can.

However, Frazee noted, the contractor who actually builds the system will be responsible for pumping and abandoning septic tanks.

Williams is easily identified - he wears a blaze orange vest - and he will come to the door and identify himself before he starts looking around a house, Frazee said.

If no one is home, he might check around the sides of the house, but Frazee said he will not enter any fenced areas unless the resident is home.
