To the Editor:

Last Wednesday morning we were shocked and saddened to see the article on the front page of The Nugget about the car theft.

We had expected to have it reported somewhere in the paper, but never dreamed it would be a front page article with the name of the accused, a 15-year-old juvenile.

Yes, you were within your legal rights to report it as you did. However, it was not the WHOLE STORY! Had you checked with the juvenile detention authorities you would have learned that Travis had confessed and was remorseful and very sorry for what he had done. He realizes that he used very poor judgment and was only considering himself.

There is not a malicious bone in his body; he did no harm to another person. He realizes what he did was wrong, and his mission now is to change and make amends for what he did. We have watched him grow up the past 10 years and we know his faults as well as his strengths.

The past weekend has changed him tremendously and we hope that others will give him the opportunity to prove that he is changed and will use better judgment in the future. He has the makings of a top-notch mechanic.

Our hope is that in the future, when there is a story about a juvenile in trouble with the law, you will take pains to investigate all sides before printing the story. The future of our young people can easily be destroyed with poor reporting.

To the Editor:

I would like to apologize to Barclay Contractors, the community of Crossroads and the Sisters community for my thoughtless actions.

I realize my behavior was unacceptable and I am very sorry. The whole episode was a major learning experience for me. In the future I intend to make decisions based on wisdom rather than impulse.

Please accept my apology.

Respectfully submitted,

Travis Gothberg

It was a long, hard year for Sally and me, but your support and help made it a little easier.
