Local students score big in history

A team of Camp Sherman youths placed first in Oregon and sixth nationally in a history competition with their presentation of "Science, Technology and Innovation in History."

"We finished first in the state (at Willamette University) and sixth place in the nationals," said team-member Emily Sims.

The other three team members were Matthew Adams, Tiffany Adams and Linda Nagle, all Sisters High School students.

The National History Day competition was held recently in College Park, Maryland.

"This team took on the 'big boys' at nationals and finished sixth out of 70 competing teams - a real tough accomplishment," said Toni Foster of Camp Sherman's Black Butte School.

This was the first time that a team from Oregon had made the "best" list of top 14 teams.

The team's presentation described the beginnings of emergency medical treatment as advocated by Dr. R. Crowley. The team took Crowley's concept of the critical "Golden Hour" as the subtitle for their presentation.

During finals competition the team was questioned on their background knowledge, and they came through with flying colors.

Sims and Matthew and Tiffany Adams are part of Camp Sherman's youth Search and Rescue team. Sims, who lives in Metolius Meadows in Camp Sherman, is working this summer at the Black Butte Ranch recreation center and at Camp Sherman's Metolius River Lodges.

She is entering her junior year at Sisters High School with plans to attend college at Western Oregon University, planning a career as teacher and counselor.
