News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District is looking for volunteers.
"I would like to have 10, at least,"said fire chief Don Rowe. "Not just firefighters -we have other positions I'd like them to work in."
Those positions include a variety of support roles, including bringing equipment to fire scenes, according to Rowe.
Those interested may apply at the Sisters Firehall at the corner of Ash and Elm streets or call 549-0771 for more information.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Oregon drivers license. They should be "able to work in extreme conditions sometimes,"Rowe said.
Volunteers must complete basic firefighter training. A firefighting academy is set to start September 11 and will run on three consecutive weekends at fire stations around Central Oregon.
The Sisters department has 35 volunteers, about 10 of whom operate out of Camp Sherman. Rowe hopes for volunteers from the outlying areas to the north of Sisters to man the new substation at Squaw Creek Canyon Estates.
Rowe noted that the Sisters department is always looking for volunteers. Those who cannot attend the Sisters academy should apply anyway.
"It's an on-going need,"Rowe said. If we get enough people after the academy, we'll put on an academy of our own."
