Sisters kids head back to school

The buses arrived on schedule Monday morning, August 30, to pick up Sisters children for their fall return to school.

Sisters Elementary students spent most of the first day learning school boundaries and discussing how to get along and create a good school.

Students at Sisters Middle School were treated to a first-day assembly where teachers dressed up and entertained them with music and dances -highlighted by a full-costume rendition of the Village People's "YMCA."

Freshmen were the only students at Sisters High School on Monday. They, too, spent a day in orientation as they take the long step from middle school to high school.

The students were briefed on the variety of activities available to them, from sports to clubs to music and drama.

"We want to get them deeply involved in the school culture," said counselor Charlie Kanzig.

Involvement in activities gives students "something they can feel good about, something they can contribute with."

Sisters schools appear to have a few more students registered than last year. However, with school starting before Labor Day and the potential for late registrations, school officials don't expect fall enrollment numbers to settle out for about two weeks.

Sisters Elementary School has 431 students registered, up from 427 last year. Sisters Middle School currently has eight more students registered than last year with a total of 278. High school enrollment is starting out at 417.
