News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Jack Berry took the reins as the 1999-2000 president of the Sisters Kiwanis Club at an installation banquet at Camp Sherman's Community Hall on Sunday, September 26.
Berry urged members of the service club to work closely with the Sisters School District in developing community facilities as part of the schools' master plan so that Kiwanis can "be a significant player in what is in store for our community down the road."
Outgoing president Norm Scott presented honors to Kiwanians for special service. Barbara Johnson, the former club secretary, was named "Kiwanian of the Year" and Bill Duehren was given the "Spirit Award." Duehren was also honored for his leadership in the club's fund-raising golf tournament.
Katie Powers was presented with the club's Hixon Award in honor of tireless efforts on behalf of the club.
Scott noted that the relatively small Sisters Kiwanis Club is exceptional in the commitment of all of its members to volunteer service.
The club logged 4,400 hours of service in the past year and raised $45,000 for various causes, including the international campaign to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) through iodizing salt supplies.
"This club never ceases to amaze me (in) the effort that is put forth by not an overwhelmingly large number of people," Scott said.
