Lady Outlaws win 3, lose 2 at Seaside

The Lady Outlaws volleyball team got a good look at some of the top teams in the state at the Seaside Invitational tournament on Saturday, October 9. The girls came away knowing they'll have to step up their play to be competitive in the playoffs.

"It was a little rough," said team co-captain Kendle Deaderick. "(The teams) were tough and it's just showing that we're going to have to work harder than we're used to."

The Lady Outlaws, undefeated in the Capital Conference this season, went in confident and took down Philomath 15-7, 15-8.

But the team hit the shoals against Clatskanie, losing 6-15, 10-15 and dropping into the consolation bracket in the 16-team tourney. The team battled back to beat Tualatin 15-18, 16-14, but then dropped another game to Seaside.

The girls beat Astoria in three games to finish third in the consolation bracket.

Deaderick attributes the Lady Outlaws' disappointing showing partly to fatigue and hunger in the fast-paced tournament, but mostly to insufficient desire and fighting spirit.

Both Deaderick and Coach Brad Bulloch believe the Lady Outlaws can compete against any of the teams they faced.

"I know we can beat them if we push ourselves," Deaderick said.

She believes her team needs "a lot of talk and confidence in each other" to succeed at state level.

"I think we all need to work together to have the same amount of desire," she said.

Bulloch believes the Seaside tournament will serve as a wake-up call to a team that has not had to play its best to win in league play.

"We're going to learn from it and it may be the turning point for us this season," he said.

The girls' team was to take on a tough Sweet Home Huskies team on the road on Tuesday, October 12.
