Bermel leads soccer league in scoring

Outlaws soccer forward Dennis Bermel turned his league-leading 19 goals into a place on the first team, all-league.

"Dennis Bermel is the most dangerous scorer in the league," said head coach Bob Bowling. "He is a great dribbler and can shoot with either foot."

Keeper Evan Owens and midfielders Adrian Molkenthin, Travis Comfort and Matt Ehrenstrom made second team.

"Adrian Molkenthin, who is an exchange student from Germany is also a great offensive threat," Bowling noted. "He has scored five goals and has five assists. He really loves the game and has been a huge asset to our team."

Comfort won praise for his work ethic.

"Travis Comfort is my hardest worker during games. He is simply tireless and plays awesome defense anywhere on the field," Bowling said.

"Matt Ehrenstrom is very physical and competitive," Bowling said. "He's probably my most versatile player, sometimes playing defensive stopper, and sometimes playing forward."

Bowling called keeper Evan Owens "our igniter, our sparkplug. He came on as a captain after two games and is a very positive communicator to get us psyched up for tough games."

Chris Schreiner won honorable mention.

"Chris Schreiner is an excellent sweeper," Bowling said. "He should have finished higher in the voting. He has saved many goals this season and even scored one on a powerful free kick."

The Outlaws came up just short of beating Grant Union last week, losing 3-2.

"That was one cold and wet match" said Bowling. "We had a lock on third place in league, so we switched a few positions around and gave plenty of playing time to reserve players. We were freezing cold, but I think we had a good time."

The Outlaws were without Bermel in their final season game against Ontario.

"Our guys showed a lot of heart in that game" said Coach Bowling.

The powerful Ontario squad won 4-2.

The Outlaws will play a road game in the first round of the AA/AAA state soccer playoff's in the Salem area on Friday November 5 or Saturday, November 6.
