Christmas food drive launched

Sisters Kiwanis and the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District have kicked off the annual Spirit of Christmas Foodshare and Gifts program.

Applications for holiday food baskets, along with gifts and clothing, are available for low-income people, seniors and singles at Sister Firehall, the Kiwanis Food Bank and through local churches.

Food donations are now being accepted at the food bank. According to Kiwanis Food Bank coordinator, David Hiller, donations of canned vegetables and pie fillings are particularly appreciated - the newer the better.

"For Christmas, we try to give people the first class stuff," Hiller said.

The food bank will provide perishable items such as Christmas hams and turkeys out of cash donations. Mail donations to Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank, PO Box 1296, Sisters, OR 97759.

Hiller was to meet Monday, November 8, with the students of the Sisters High School Key Club to start the Sisters High School food drive.

According to Hiller, the sophomore, junior and senior classes competed in a food drive last year and collected a total of more than 4,000 pounds of food.

Family pets will share in the holiday bounty through the annual Furry Friends Food Drive. Deliver pet food donations to The Nugget at 442 East Main Ave.

Furry Friends cash donations are also welcome; make checks out to The Nugget - Furry Friends Food Drive.
