Hiker rescued by Sisters men

Black Butte Ranch resident Richard Wood and his brother Willem rescued a transient who was caught in a snowstorm last weekend at the summit of McKenzie Pass.

According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, the Wood broth- ers snowmobiled up to the Dee Wright Observatory, where Richard Wood heard cries for help coming from an outhouse.

Howard James Embert, 30, apparently hiked from the west side of the Cascades to the summit, where he was caught in a snowstorm.

According to sheriff's office reports, he spent two or three days in the outhouse with no food or water.

Wood transported Embert to Sisters and called 9-1-1. Sisters paramedics noted that he was suffering from exposure.

After consuming some water and broth, Embert was transported by a sheriff's deputy to a men's shelter in Bend.
