Cookbook nourishes community

The "Black Butte Ranch Cookbook" has provided many delicious recipes for Sisters residents and visitors, while supporting various local community causes.

In the past, $1000 was donated to the Sisters Elementary School classroom raising project and a like amount was given to Sisters Elementary School to help fund a sound system.

Now the BBR cookbook committee has created a scholarship of $2,000 for a Sisters High School student going on to an Oregon college.

Cookbook chairman Marilyn Handy and BBR Women's Association President Barbara Burkart both emphasized that "profits from the cookbook were planned to go back and help the community."

The cookbook is available at many local shops throughout Central Oregon and contains over 200 recipes. These are nicely grouped in sequence of appetizer through dessert recipes.

Since its introduction in 1996, cookbook sales are nearing 5,000 copies. The watercolor cover was done by Connie O'Brien, BBR resident; it features a meadow scene with Black Butte.

Two years in development, the cookbook recipes came from BBR homeowners, employees and friends. Sketches throughout the book are provided by local residents and display the flora and fauna of the ranch. The sketches are enhanced by artist Charlotte Milam.

The Black Butte Ranch Cookbook sells for $14.95 and is printed by Maverick Press.
