Art students help those in need

Sisters High School art students are helping the Family Access Network (FAN) reach out to those in need in the local community through the "Empty Bowls for FAN" program.

The artists, aided by local potter Mitch Deaderick and instructor Mike Baynes, have been throwing and glazing pottery bowls, which will be filled with soup at a benefit dinner on Friday, April 14.

Dinner is at 6 p.m. at Sisters High School.

Those attending the dinner will dine on soup served in the hand-crafted bowls, which they can take home with them. The soup, along with bread, drinks and dessert, will be provided by Sisters High School Culinary Arts students.

Every dollar raised by each $10 ticket sold will go into the FAN Emergency Access Fund, which helps families facing crises triggered by medical bills or the need for dental or vision care.

"People don't realize what this Emergency Access Fund does for people in this community," said FAN director Theresa Slavkovsky. "It changes lives."

Art teacher Mike Baynes said Sisters "borrowed" the Empty Bowls for FAN concept from a program launched by art teachers in Michigan. That program was targeted at combating hunger.

The FAN program remains true to the original "Empty Bowls" concept, since many of the families aided by the emergency fund are in a position where they have to choose between getting medical care and buying groceries.

The program was made possible by a $500 grant from the Aid Association of Lutherans (Shepherd of the Hills) Branch 9212. The grant paid for supplies to make the bowls and provide the food, allowing the fund-raiser a 100 percent profit margin.

There are 100 tickets available (children under six eat free, but do not receive a bowl).

Entertainment and art displays will be featured at the dinner. For more information call 549-4045.
