To the Editor:

In recent newspaper articles outlining the troubles between the Deschutes County Public Library and the City of Sisters, the comment was made that the district maintained the interior of the building and the city maintained the exterior.

We would like to point out the city mows the lawn and provides snow removal.

The Friends of the Sisters Library and the Sisters Garden Club provide funds to landscape the library grounds and the Garden Club members labor very hard to create the beautiful gardens surrounding the building. In the past, volunteers have painted the exterior of the building with paint provided by the Friends of the Library.

Here is a quote from a recent editorial in the Idaho Coeur D' Alene Press, "A city's self esteem is tied in significant ways to its public library. The state of a public library says a great deal about the people who live in a city, the educational system, and the priorities given to learning, diversity and vitality."

We couldn't have said it better....

To the Editor:

The Benefit Party Rocked! I would like to send a deep and heartfelt thanks to those dear friends, family and community members who created one of my most memorable evenings. Thanks to those amazing artists, healers, storekeepers, restaurateurs, and outdoor adventurists who donated their work and spirit in my time of need.

And thanks to those who joined in the night of the event to help with the festivities. The evening began with the wonderful tunes of Brad Tisdel while folks from Sisters, Camp Sherman, Bend and Portland poured into the Community Hall. Amicable competition started up during the silent auction for donated art, outdoor adventures, dinners, massages, fitness programs, food, books, haircuts, and other gift items.

Bluesberry Jam got the crowd kicking up their heels in celebration. It was incredibly moving for me to feel the healing support from such a generous community.

The total proceeds from the evening came to $11,500! Far above and beyond anyone's expectations. This will help alleviate the stress of many medical bills pouring in.

My warmest thanks to all,

Justyn Livingston

PS. All of the party organizers would like to extend their gratitude to all those who came with love and warm spirits to make this benefit such a memorable evening.

To the Editor:

Hats off to all the dedicated counselors, cooks, artists, dramatists, musicians, coordinators and sponsors who contributed to the success of the SMART readers summer camp program at Camp Caldera.

I wish every child had the opportunity my son reveled in this summer. It was an exciting week of kayaking, swimming, horseback riding, painting pictures, making music, performing, and of course, reading -- all in the beautiful, inspiring setting of Blue Lake.

I'll never forget the joy and pride radiating from his whole being as he and his fellow campers presented their families with a performance art adaptation of Dr. Seuss' "Oh! the Places You'll Go." What a resounding success story for these kids who may have needed a little extra support with reading.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the generous individuals who provide the funding and to all involved who make this delightful camp a reality. Know that you have made the best investment possible: our children.

Sincerely,

Abigail Merickel
