Swisher's second surgery successful

Steve Swisher, superintendent of Sisters schools, underwent a successful six-hour surgery on Friday, September 29, to repair a broken pelvis and ankle.

Swisher was badly injured in a head-on automobile crash on Highway 20 on the eastern outskirts of Sisters on Friday, September 22.

Swisher's condition has improved steadily after surgery at St. Charles Medical Center on Saturday, September 23, that repaired injuries to his chest and rib cage.

According to Sisters School Board Chair Bill Reed, if all goes well in Swisher's recovery the superintendent could be released to come home to Sisters as early as Friday, October 6.

"Steve hasn't lost his sense of humor, he's been cracking jokes," Reed noted. He said Swisher will be "back on the job -- and sooner than you might expect."

Swisher and his family have acknowledged the outpouring of community support in the wake of the accident. Almost all of Swisher's medical expenses will be covered by insurance and Swisher has asked that any contributions from the community be directed to help others in the community.

A "We Love Steve" fund has been established through the Sisters Schools Foundation. Funds will be used to help others in need.

For information on the community assistance fund, contact the school district office at 549-8521. Inquiries about Swisher's condition should also be directed to the district office rather than the hospital.

Swisher cannot have visitors.
