News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Stocks of food are low at the Kiwanis Food Bank in Sisters and volunteers are looking for donations.
Forty-one needy families were served last month, a total of 140 people, reports Glenn Keeran, volunteer and acting manager.
"Anyone wanting to donate non-perishable food items should bring them to the food bank so the stocks may be built up," Keeran said.
Stocking the food bank becomes particularly important with Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays fast approaching. Cash donations may also be made at the Kiwanis Food Bank office located at 225 N. Oak St. in Sisters.
Keeran reports that the food bank purchases about $4,000 worth of food each year and distributes between four and five tons of food yearly. Frozen foods and other perishable items are obtained from the Oregon Food Bank.
"This community has been so helpful and supportive of our food bank," said Keeran. "It sometimes surprises me how generous people in the Sisters area are. I came from a larger city and the response here is fantastic."
Keeran reports a recent run on supplies.
"Our biggest months this year have been August and October. It seems that as winter approaches, food supplies are used up faster from the food bank.
"We try to be generous to the people we help," Keeran said. "After filling out an application, people in need can immediately receive foods from our food bank."
The food bank is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Low/no income people can receive food once a month from the food bank. No one in need is turned away.
