Outlaw Open nets funds, fun and prizes

Local golfers teed up to benefit the Sisters High School football program at the fifth annual Outlaw Open held last Friday, June 29, at Aspen Lakes golf course.

The event grossed $20,590 and, after expenses, netted $13,970 which will be used to purchase equipment, supplies and uniforms.

Coaches' salaries and transportation costs are funded through the school budget.

The event should leave the football program in good financial shape for the fall season.

One football player said, "It's the only fund raiser we do, but because it's so successful, it's the only one we need to do."

Participation was high this year.

"I think we had between 108 and 112 golfers out there," head coach Bob Macauley noted. "It was a lot of fun, and everyone had a good time. Sykes' Seafood catered the dinner, and about 220 people ate salmon and tri-tip. It was great.

"Dr. Ted Lynch donated a pair of braces, good for four years, to the auction -- that was worth around $4,500. Multnomah Publishers also contributed generously," Macauley noted.

The tournament has become a signature event for locals among the summer's tourist-oriented activities.

"This was our fifth year, and it keeps getting bigger and better, thanks to the generosity of the Cyrus family (the owners of Aspen Lakes)," Macauley said. "Matt Cyrus was the tournament coordinator, and Keith and Connie Cyrus help us to keep going and growing. I'm already looking forward to next year."
