News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Folks in Sisters can enjoy a Saturday full of old-fashioned fun and entertainment at the Country Fair at the Sisters Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 11.
The fair opens at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church, 1/4 mile west of Sisters on the McKenzie Highway. The event runs until 4 p.m.
Live entertainment will be going on all day, free, on the outdoor stage. Featured entertainers will be two of The Booher Family plus Dick Sandvik and Jim Cornelius, known locally as the Hoarse Whisperers,
There will be rides for the kids on ponies and horses plus a surrey ride pulled by a miniature Friesian horse. New also this year will be a "bouncy room," a bin full of plastic balls for jumping and tumbling.
Other children's games include a beanbag toss, fishing hole, and a ball throw.
A petting zoo with miniature goats, donkeys and a hutch of rabbits, a puppet show put on by the Sisters Fire Department, face painting and story telling will also be available for the kids.
A new addition this year is "Grandma's Attic." Dell Henrich, creator of the "Grandma's Attic" booth, said she has been given several pre World War II, hand-painted, bowls, platters and cake servers originally from Bavaria, Germany and Silesia.
These heirloom pieces, from the donor's own grandma, are all marked with the craftsman's symbol of a crown.
Also in Grandma's Attic are several black jet necklaces, true collectors' pieces and, among many other fine items, a 60-inch round oak table with claw feet.
Henrich said that all of Grandma's Attic items are for sale to individuals and requested, "No dealers, please."
Over 500 pint jars of home-canned treats will be available for sale. Among the delectables are brandied peach jam, apple ginger marmalade, cranberry pear relish, 3-pepper jelly, marinated mushrooms and Oregon, "made-by-hand," strawberry jam.
Lunch will be served all day as will homemade marionberry cobblers alamode, sarsaparilla (root beer) floats and do-it-your-self sundaes.
The traditional White Elephant Booth will be loaded with hundreds items and dozens of home-made breads, cookies and candies will also be on sale.
An Art Show and Sale, which runs in conjunction with the fair, kicks off Friday night 5 to 8 p.m. with an artist's preview reception, offering free wine and hors d'oeuvres.
Over 200 art pieces will be on display representing 60 local artists. The art show continues all day Saturday. It is held in the undercroft (basement) of the church.
The Country Fair is sponsored by The Episcopal Church for the benefit of all of Sisters through the church's Outreach Program. There is no admission charge and parking is free.
