Two small rustic buildings will soon meet the wrecking ball.
Two rustic buildings on Cascade Avenue will be knocked down and replaced with new Western-styled retail spaces under a plan submitted to the City of Sisters by developer Bill Reed.
One site is the current location of Arts of the West at 281 W. Cascade Avenue. Owner Mike Hug is holding a clearance sale to reduce inventory before closing his doors on or around Saturday, September 15.
Hug said that he and his wife Bev plan to stay in Sisters and will continue to offer framing services and will still have art work for sale. The Hugs will look for another suitable store location.
"As far as we can, we anticipate staying in the area," Hug said.
Arts of the West can be reached at P.O. Box 2068 or 549-4098. Hug said the phone number will remain valid for some period after the store closes.
Reed's application calls for two new buildings designed by Scott Steele Associates of Bend. The spaces are 2,960 square feet and 2,688 square feet.
"Right now, it's like 'spec' retail," said city planner Neil Thompson.
The application, which will be heard by the Sisters Planning Commission at the Wednesday, September 19 meeting, is the first commercial redevelopment project to hit Thompson's desk since the sewer installation.
According to Thompson, the biggest challenge facing Reed in seeing the application through is meeting parking requirements. Thompson estimates that the properties will require about 14 spaces.
"You no longer get credit for anything along Cascade (Avenue)," Thompson noted.
However, Reed owns half of that block and the COCC building behind it and parking can be re-aligned.
