News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Quarterback Mike Greene draws a bead at the Outlaw Jamboree on Friday, August 31.
The Sisters Outlaws are coming into the fall season armed and dangerous.
Sisters' most explosive offensive threat is senior Mike Greene. Greene is splitting time between the receiver and quarterback positions.
Coach Bob Macauley is slowly handing the quarterback reins over to junior Pat Burke. By doing this, Macauley hopes to build Burke's experience -- and to cut Greene loose to roam downfield where he is always a threat to score with his hands and his speed.
Burke has a slew of receivers to choose from. Greene and Seth Teague have established themselves as the top receivers on the team while Ian McAllister, Joel Meyer, Nathan Harpham and Jawan Davis all battle for the remaining positions.
Senior running back J.D. Chatelain is an explosive running back who hits the hole hard. Chatelain is looking forward to bouncing back after suffering a knee injury mid-way through last season. Juniors Tel White and Ryan Harper will also be splitting time at the running back position.
Ask any player where the most important positions are on the field and you will get the same answer: The offensive line is where the game is truly won. The Outlaws are returning some big starters from last year's team. Senior guards Matt Bliven and Robert Hedin can create holes large enough to drive a truck through. Senior tackle Steve Mills will pave roads to the end zone for any running back.
Junior Josh Kelleher has won the starting center position. Matt Riveria and Drew Herberger are still battling over the left tackle position. Trace Barret was projected as the starting left tackle but transferred to Phoenix High School.
Sisters tasted its first piece of action on Friday, August 31, hosting a five-team Jamboree. Visiting teams included La Pine, Henley, Madras, and Bend's new high school, Summit.
In a Jamboree setting a team plays a total of 15 offensive and 15 defensive plays against each team.
The Outlaws created a little history when they became the first team to play Summit in a competitive match. Sisters welcomed the Storm with a 20-0 thumping.
The Outlaws fought the La Pine Hawks down to the wire. The Hawks managed to score on their last offensive play of the scrimmage and flew away with a 6-0 win. The Outlaws closed out the night with a 16-14 win over the Henley Hornets.
Offensively, Pat Burke and Mike Greene make a deadly combination whenever the two connect. Greene hauled in eight passes from Burke for a total of 176 yards and three touchdowns. Burke completed a total of 10 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Andy Macauley caught Burke's fourth touchdown pass on an 18-yard crossing pattern.
J.D. Chatelain scampered for 47 yards on six carries to pace all other Outlaw rushers. Ryan Harper carried twice for 20 yards.
Head coach Bob Macauley was pleased overall with his team's performance.
"I am happy with our hustle, and where we are," he said. "Were so much better than last year ... at this point. There is not alot to fix on defense. We just want 11 guys flying around with their heads on fire."
Sisters travels to The Dalles on Friday, September 7. Macauley is looking forward to the game against the Indians.
Said Macauley, "They are an extremely talented team and it will be a very good contest for us."
