News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Painters are putting the finishing touches on the re-faced Sisters High School. The need to finish painting has pushed the completion date past the September 19 deadline to October 3.
"The (painting) contractor underestimated the time it would take to finish the job," said school district construction projects manager Bob Martin.
However, the delay will not add to the price tag for the repair job, Martin said. The total bill for removing the old siding and replacing it with Hardiplank® cement siding has reached $482,000.
In addition to finishing the painting, Martin said, there will be some reseeding of areas of ground left raw after new drywells were dug to handle runoff. Martin said that flood irrigation is greening up the grass around the school, which had been allowed to go brown.
The school has new gutters designed to flow water away from the walls of the school. The Hardiplank siding is expected to be impervious to water, solving the problems of water intrusion that required removal of the original EFIS (Exterior Finish Insulation System) siding.
The project was launched at the beginning of summer. Though some extra work was required to strengthen soffit areas to hold the new gutters and to conform to more stringent fire codes, there were relatively few surprises in the project.
Sisters High School opened in 1993.
