A new cut road...
Another link in a road system that will eventually connect subdivisions north of Sisters with Sisters High School is being constructed at Mountain Shadow RV Park.
When completed, the road will run from Barclay Drive in the Sisters Industrial Park and across Forest Service property past Ponderosa Lodge. A traffic signal will mark an intersection with Highway 20. From there, the road will run past Mountain Shadow, through the development at The Pines and on to the high school.
Each developer along the way has to pay for a portion of the road, tentatively named McKinney Butte Road.
The portion near the RV park was scheduled to be under construction this week and is expected to be completed this year.
"This is part of the original site plan for Mountain Shadow RV Park," said Public Works Director Gary Frazee.
City planner Neil Thompson noted that the city council allowed the owner of the RV park and motel to delay construction until there was an actual need for the road.
The development of The Pines -- with its portion of road -- triggered the need to start the project. However, the city agreed to postpone construction until after the sewer lines had been laid in to avoid having to dig into new pavement.
"I was the one who suggested we wait till the sewer system was in," Frazee said.
The next two major components of the road will be constructed over the next couple of years. Sisters High School will be responsible for a portion of the road when the new school facility is constructed in 2003.
The portion of the road that runs across Forest Service land is expected to be completed in November 2002.
The City of Sisters has a $750,000 grant to complete the road from Barclay Drive to Highway 20.
