News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Patti Little and her eldest son, Richard, had been planning a trip to New York City for a long time before the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center made leisure travel there seem inappropriate -- or downright nerve-wracking.
In a spirit of resilience and resistance to terror, the pair decided to go anyway -- only now they are on a mission.
The Littles are delivering two banners to the wounded city, bearing the statement "Sisters, Oregon, Loves New York -- United We Stand" and the signatures of dozens of Sisters area residents.
"We are delivering them to Fire Station 54, Engine Co. 9," Patti Little said. That engine company lost 15 firefighters in the Trade Center tower collapse.
"The banners are created to go on the barricades there," Little said.
Her son Richard, 30, designed the banners with his company, Professional Image Advertising, Inc. in California. The Sisters banners are among 12 that are being signed at various locations in California, Arizona and Oregon. The project is named "1,000 Square Feet of Love."
Federal Express is shipping the banners for free, Little reported.
The Leadership Class at Sisters High School took on the responsibility of getting the banners signed at school sporting events.
The brokerage firm Morgan Stanley is sponsoring the project and matching cash donations to a Victims Relief Fund for victims of the September 11 attacks. Those who wish to donate may do so at: Morgan Stanley Community Affairs, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, 27th Floor, New York NY 10020.
