News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Santa and Mrs. Claus visited Sisters for the annual Christmas Parade.
Sisters residents and visitors braved a heavy snowstorm on Saturday, November 24, to celebrate the kick-off of the holiday season with a traditional Christmas parade down Hood Avenue.
Jeri Buckmann, events coordinator for the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce, organized the event. She was pleased with the turnout.
"Actually, I was surprised there were as many people as there were," Buckmann said.
There were plenty of entries in the parade, ranging from Campfire Boys and Girls to riders on fine (and very wet) horses, to Santa and Mrs. Claus seated on snowmobiles. All 25 entries were given ribbons to commemorate their participation. After the parade, some 300 people stopped by the Chamber Visitors Center where children visited with Santa, the community Christmas tree was lit and singers shared Christmas carols.
Santa and Mrs. Claus visited stores and restaurants around town, talking with children and tourists.
"They made a full day of it," Buckmann said.
The parade and tree lighting events are the first among a number of holiday events.
The chamber will sponsor its traditional lighting contest, honoring the best residential and best commercial displays.
Sisters Rotary Club will host the "Magical Voices of Christmas" concert on Saturday, December 8, at 7 p.m. at Sisters High School.
Paulina Springs Book Company will host their traditional holiday singa-along on Saturday, December 15.
