Man walks away from Sisters wreck

John Patrick Kalista survived. His driving privileges will not.

A Redmond man survived a wreck that, to all appearances, could have cost him his life on Friday, February 8.

According to sheriff's office reports, John Patrick Kalista, 25, of Redmond, was traveling westbound on Highway 126 shortly after 11 p.m. when he lost control of his mother-in-law's 1987 Ford Taurus, ran off the road and went head-on into a tree.

Deputies investigating the accident reported that the vehicle was airborne for some 20 feet before it hit the tree, leaving an impact scar well up the trunk. The accident took place near Willow Road, approximately one mile east of Sisters.

Kalista allegedly told deputies that he was tuning in a radio station when he lost control of the vehicle.

Kalista and his traveling companion, identified only as Dan, both left the scene and were reportedly driven back to Redmond by a Sisters area resident who heard the crash.

The accident was not reported until 3:24 a.m. Saturday morning, when paramedics were summoned to Kalista's home in Redmond because he was in pain from the accident.

Deputies interviewed Kalista in the hospital emergency room. He was cited for driving with a suspended license.
