News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
to buy industrial land
Multnomah Publishers of Sisters will purchase the 35-acre Barclay Meadows Business Park parcel at the north end of Sisters.
Multnomah has been looking in Sisters and outside the community for a suitable "campus" site for its growing publishing business.
Multnomah publishes Christian books, including the runaway bestseller, "The Prayer of Jabez." The company releases about 70 titles each year and carries a backlist of more than 600 titles.
"We are delighted to have found a place that we can call home," company president Don Jacobson said in a prepared release. "This is a property that will allow us to settle in and build facilities properly to grow our company."
The publisher currently operates out of office space scattered around Sisters.
The development of the site had been a hotly contested issue in Sisters. The approval of the development was appealed to the Oregon Supreme Court, but the court declined to hear it.
Some issues still remain to be worked out. Deschutes County is required to develop findings that transportation issues are properly addressed.
Neighbors in Trapper Point see a publisher's campus as a relatively benign use.
"The bottom line is that it's a better deal for the neighbors," said Trapper Point resident Denny Ebner, who had been a leader in fighting the development.
Ebner said he hopes the publisher will site buildings to avoid blocking views.
"We want to work with them to buffer with trees and berms," Ebner said.
The neighbors are still involved in the land use process, however.
"The neighbors want to settle this," Ebner said. "But we can't give up our transportation issue without getting something (from Multnomah)."
