Baseball team starts undefeated

The boys varsity baseball ended their first week of league play the same way they tore through the preseason. The boys won both games in impressive fashion under the 10 run mercy rule.

The Outlaws crushed the Molalla Indians 12-2 on Tuesday, April 2. The game was called after six innings.

Evan Livsey fired a two-hitter and went the distance.

"Evan was sharp in the first three innings, but he walked the bases loaded in the fourth," Coach Ray Garrettson said. "He worked out of the jam, and settled down again in the fifth and sixth. He had good command of his slider."

Livsey walked five batters, and struck out seven.

Sisters broke the game open with an eight run second inning. Molalla committed three errors to aid the Outlaws.

"Teams that give us an extra out or two in an inning pay the price against us," the coach said. "We don't really have a weak link in our batting order.

"We faced Kenny Kripucka, their ace, who was one of the better pitchers in the league last year -- and we scored all of our runs off him."

Matt Harp led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Mike Greene and Pat Burke contributed with two hits each.

One of Burke's hits was for extra bases -- a double off the wall.

Sisters then hosted Sweet Home on Thursday, and while it was a different team, it was the same result.

The Outlaws kept pouring it on against the Huskies, winning 11-1 after six innings.

It was Mike Greene's turn to throw a complete game.

"He worked out of trouble in the sixth," the coach said. "The bases were loaded, and with two outs. He got a ground out to end the inning. It was the turning point of the game.

"We were up 8-1 at the time, and they were trying to mount a little rally. Mike showed maturity and poise against a pretty good hitting team. He threw strikes and stayed out of the big inning."

Pat Burke continued his power surge, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.

Garrettson is happy with the team's development so far.

"Our pitching is further along than I would have thought," he said. "I was hoping that our defense and our bats would buy our pitchers some time to develop. We still have some things to work on, but we're off to a good start."

Sisters is 12-1-1 overall, 2-0 in league.
