News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Local author John Hayes presented his new book at Paulina Springs Book Company.
John Hayes always wanted to be a writer.
However, he didn't get a whole lot of encouragement in that direction from friends and family, who informed him that such folk don't do well -- financially, personally or socially.
For years, Hayes hid his writing light under a bushel -- or, more accurately, in a three-ring binder stuffed back in a closet. Then, a few years ago, he decided that he was going to push ahead with his dream and he started writing for newspapers (including The Nugget) and magazines.
His writing career has taken a major step forward with the publication of his new book "Cascade Chronicles: Timeless Wanderings."
Hayes presented his book to an enthusiastic audience at Paulina Springs Book Company on Saturday, April 27. Hayes read selections from the book and regaled the crowd with the tale of his development as a writer and his adventures in entering the publishing game.
"Cascade Chronicles" eloquently recounts Hayes' love affair with the Sisters country, whether the setting is a high lake or the back porch of Hayes' home north of town, watching a lightning storm bear down.
Hayes' passion for history is put to good use as he weaves local lore into accounts of his own explorations.
The writer took extensive field notes during his hikes and explorations in preparation for writing the book.
"It was so much fun I had to keep reminding myself I wasn't on vacation and get back to focusing on the task at hand," he said.
