News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Amy Cretsinger set a record in the long jump.
Sisters' track team turned in a strong district meet performance last week to qualify girls for the state meet in eight of 10 running events.
Outlaws girls will also go to state in two jumping events, putting them in position to match or improve last year's third place team finish.
The Capital Conference District meet was held May 17-18 at Molalla High School. Cascade won the team title with 178 points, followed by Sisters with 157.5, Stayton 95, Molalla 86.5, North Marion 61.5, Sweet Home 56.5, and Central 27.
Amy Cretsinger established a new district meet record on Friday in the long jump, soaring 18-feet-6-1/2 inches. The leap broke the school record of 17-feet-11-3/4-inches established in 1999 by Cortney Ellis.
On Saturday, Cretsinger continued her winning ways, claiming the triple jump with a leap of 35-feet-11-inches and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 46.91. In addition, she was a member of the winning 400 meter relay team along with Molly Van Acker, Minique Yost, and Noel Kimbrough, clocked in 50.23.
Kimbrough and Yost dominated the sprints as Kimbrough won the 100 (12.98) and 200 (26.47 -- new school record) meter dashes while Yost grabbed the blue ribbon in the 400 (59.27 -- new school record) and was second in the 200 (26.87).
Resa Hodson racked up two individual berths to state by finishing second in both the 1,500 (5:00.22) and 800 meters (2:27).
Hodson joined Kimbrough, Yost, and Van Acker on the second place 1600 meter relay team as well. The foursome finished in a season best 4:07.53, which is among the fastest 3A times going in to the state meet.
Iris Powell, who finished third in the 800 (2:28.7), will represent the Outlaws at state in the 800 meters after Hodson was pulled from the event to concentrate on the 1,500 meter run and the 1,600 meter relay.
"The kids are peaking nicely and are getting even more mentally tough," said Coach Bob Johnson. "For us to pick up five school records at District shows things are coming together."
The state meet is scheduled for Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25 at the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.
