Student filmmaker bound for college

Paul Head is set to launch his film career.

Camp Sherman's young filmmaker, Paul Head, will launch his college career this fall at Chapman University's film department in Orange, California.

Scholarships from the Black Butte School Foundation Frank Dale Memorial ($500; renewable) and the Multnomah Character ($1,000) and the Camp Sherman Pine Needlers ($500) awards will help jump-start college life.

"I'm excited to go there and do what I want to do," said Head.

Since sixth grade at Black Butte School he has been involved with video and film work. This included five documentaries entered in National History day competitions (1996-2000). Paul continued with several video production works during his Sisters High School years and creation of the Outlaw Film Festival.

Last year he completed a four-week film workshop at the New York Film Academy.

"I was able to hire actors, meet filmmakers, see back lots, and visit prop houses as well as writing and directing three short 16mm films," said Head. "This incredible workshop, held at Universal Studios, taught me the disciplines and skills required in making films."

Paul also had an Internship (2001-2002) with Strada Crane, which makes the longest film cranes in existence.

"For this company, I attended the Cine Gear Expo at Warner Bros., directed several shots and took behind the scenes footage used in the company's demo reel," Head said. "I have also directed my own shot for the Outlaw Film Festival using this crane."

Asked about his plans at Chapman University, Paul said, "I'm interested in film production and would like to direct.

"Production assistant, gopher, assistant cameraman, assistant director are all possible jobs I'm willing to do. Eventually I'd like to do narrative features."
