Sisters artist portrays rally cars

Porsches on the road, by Suzi Sheward.

Sisters artist Suzi Sheward has completed the second in a series of posters she is painting for Monte Shelton's Northwest Classic Road Rally.

The rally wil take place August 8-11 from Portland to Eugene and around the Willamette Valley.

This current poster features a 1962 Porsche Speedster, one of three usually competing in the event.

The rally is composed of sports cars produced before 1969 and is limited to 90 cars.

The drivers are given detailed instructions 15 minutes before each car is scheduled to depart -- requiring quick calculations on the part of the navigator. The instructions, requiring precise observations and calculations throughout the day, are designed to be tricky.

Sheward quipped that "normally by the end of every race day each driver and navigator team have averaged three heated arguments and for this reason husbands and wives are not encouraged to be on the same team."

For the last two years, Sheward and Annie Andreson of Coldwell Banker Reed Bros. Realty have entered as a team in an Alfa Romeo GTV sponsored by Joseph Angel of Sisters and Portland.

The rally starts from Monte Shelton's Jaguar Dealership in Portland on a Thursday each August and ends four days later in a different destination in the Northwest.

The NW Classic Road Rally is sponsored by the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club of Oregon to benefit the March of Dimes.
