News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The fire district has purchased the site of the city shops.
The Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District now owns the entire city block where the fire hall now sits.
The district purchased the area where the city maintenance shops now sit for $200,000. The city has three years to vacate the site, though it is expected that the city will move out as soon as shops near the sewer plant are built.
The fire district won't be ready to do much on the property for a couple of years, according to fire Chief Don Rowe.
The main priority is to create quarters for firefighters.
"We need sleeping quarters before we can hire anyone else," Rowe said.
The district plans to expand without adding any burden to taxpayers.
"We don't want to go out for any bond or anything," Rowe said.
That means the district will need some time to save money and to seek grant funding.
Rowe said the district will have a conceptual plan for the site within a year. That plan will include parking, office space, sleeping quarters and storage facilities. The district may also lease space to the Oregon Department of Forestry, which currently has offices across the street.
