Quilt Show offers many events, exhibits

Quilters began arriving in Sisters last week for classes and activities leading up to the annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on Saturday, July 13.

The Quilt Show has become one of the most famous and well-attended shows in the world, drawing some 20,000 hobbyists and professionals to town.

During the week, quilters hit the sewing machines in a series of classes known as "A Quilter's Affair." The instructors' quilts will be displayed on the lawn at Town Square.

The one-day show on Saturday features about 1,000 quilts hung on Sisters businesses early in the morning and removed again that evening. In between, the hordes of quilters and spectators view the quilts, enjoying their colorful artistry, learning new techniques and gaining inspiration.

Special exhibits:

• Featured Quilter Phyllis Dickenson will exhibit on the lawn at Ponderosa Properties (corner of Hood Ave. and Ash St.). Dickenson's quilts contain unique personal stories and mementos (see story, The Nugget, July 3, page 1).

• Jeem Elliott will display at Sisters Drug Co. (corner of Cascade Ave. and Fir St.). Her style is a contemporary take on folk art.

• Kaye England, author of "Quilt Inspirations from Africa," will show her work at Rainbow Connection on Cascade Ave.

• Sherry Jack's landscape quilts will be on display at the Quilt Show Office (next to Sisters Athletic Club).

• Dale Losey will present her exceptionally colorful work at The Place on Elm Street (across from the Chamber of Commerce).

• Pat Hastings, creator of a Lewis & Clark series of quilts, will show her work at Sisters Furniture.

• Edith Sorgen, whose work was featured in an early book by quilt show founder Jean Wells, will show at Village Interiors.

• The Stitchin' Post will feature quilts from an employee challenge crafted around the theme "Stars & Stripes Forever."

• The Quilting Today Challenge Exhibit will be held at the City Center Building (corner of Hood Ave. and Elm St.).

• Quilts from Japan will be featured in the courtyard next to Paulina Springs Book Co. (252 W. Hood Ave.).

• Leavitt's Western Wear will host the Bitterroot Valley Tribute Quilts honoring firefighters.

• Wild Dusty Rose will host a display of Amish quilts.

Fund-raisers:

• The Friends of the Sisters Library will hold their annual used book sale at the Sisters Library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The library is located on the southwest corner of Main Avenue and Spruce Street.

• The Outlaws cross country team will serve breakfast and lunch in the Village Green.
