Ash Street park planning underway

The site of the future Harold Barclay Memorial Park.

By this time next year, quilters will hopefully have a place to rest in the shade -- with access to public restrooms.

Proponents of the recently-named Harold Barclay Memorial Park located next to the Gallery Restaurant had hoped to have the restrooms up and running by the 2002 Quilt Show, but the timetable proved too ambitious.

The City of Sisters has obtained deeds from adjacent property owners along the street and Sisters Kiwanis and the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce have raised $25,000 over a period of years for the restroom facilities.

According to park planning committee chairman Peter Storton, Scott Steele Associates is working on a site plan.

The committee, which includes city officials, members of service clubs and chamber representatives, hopes to preserve the trees along the side of the street and restore a circulating water feature.

The park is conceived as a "green spot" in the downtown commercial core that will allow shoppers and visitors to sit down and take a break from strolling the streets of Sisters.
