Gallery walk a success

Bob Sant teaches Evan Rickards how to throw a pot.

Local gallery owners scored a success with the first Sisters Gallery Walk held Friday, August 16, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The free event included five galleries, each hosting a special artist feature. The event was sponsored by SistersGalleries.Com, an internet resource for Sisters area artists.

Julia Rickards of Clearwater Gallery said the event was surprisingly well-attended.

"We had 70-75 people through our gallery," she said.

The visitors were mostly locals, but there was a fairly large contingent of people from Bend and Redmond. The out-of-town visitors said they look for arts events to attend.

Clearwater Gallery featured a demonstration on the front porch by potter Bob Sant.

According to Rickards, the demonstration was a big part of the draw to the gallery.

"We'll always have a demonstration going on," she said. "I think anything where people can see the art being done is very interesting."

The success of the event has made it more likely that more events will follow. According to Rickards, she has talked with High Desert Gallery proprietor Myrna Dow about another possible event in September and regular quarterly gallery walks throughout the year.

Participating galleries in Friday's event were: Canyon Creek Pottery, Clearwater Gallery, High Desert Gallery, Sisters Gallery & Frame Shop, and Soda Creek Gallery.
