News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Walls are starting to go up at the new Sisters High School.
Crews are putting up masonry blocks at a rate of 300 lineal feet per day to a height of four feet. Meanwhile, concrete slab for the classroom wing and footings for the auditorium were to be poured this week.
The project remains on schedule for completion by December 2003, according to school district construction manager Bob Martin.
"We're on schedule," Martin said. "I can't say we're a day ahead, but we're on schedule."
According to Martin, the district hopes to open classrooms for instruction in October 2003. The gym is to be ready for winter sports and the auditorium is to be available for holiday season events.
The construction team has been working hard to get critical concrete work done before cold weather sets in. Crews have been pouring concrete in the early morning hours to beat the heat of the day and avoid having the concrete cure too quickly.
Weather has been cooperative.
"There hasn't been anything from a weather aspect that has created any delay out here," Martin said.
The budget picture will not be clear until bids come in at the end of August for the work that will complete the project.
The $20 million project is designed to accommodate growth to 700 students.
The current high school will become a middle school.
