Historic steam engine on display

The Crooked River Dinner Train will celebrate the third annual Railroad Day festival at the train station at 4075 N.E. O'Neil Junction in Redmond on Saturday, September 7.

The historic Mt. Emily Shay Steam Engine #1 will arrive at the train station at approximately 11 a.m. and will be on display until 5 p.m., when the train boards its passengers for the evening run. Engineer Roy Hill and Fireman Martin Hansen will be on hand to answer questions.

The festival will feature a beer garden and concessions.

Built in 1923 by the Lima Locomotive Works, The Mt. Emily Shay Steam Engine was one of only 2,776 such locomotives built.

Made to climb steep grades, the #1 worked for 30 years for the Mt. Emily Lumber Company in La Grande.

In 1955 the company started hauling its logs by truck and scrapped its railroad.

The #1 was leased to the City of Prineville Railway by the Oregon Historical Society and operates on that line.
