News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Shawn Jewell and Tim Davis have launched a new security firm in Sisters.
Sisters Taekwondo instructor Tim Davis has parlayed his years of experience in security and the martial arts into a new Sisters-based security company.
Davis and his partner Shawn Jewell founded Best Protection Specialists this summer, after months of training and certification through the State of Oregon.
The team has provided event security for the Sisters Folk Festival and several Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce activities.
But event security is only part of the work done by BPS. As the company grows, it will provide bodyguard services and consultation on security and asset protection for businesses.
Davis' work providing security for Sisters Starry Nights performers planted the seed for the development of BPS. Impressed with his handling of security, John Hiatt's management asked Davis if he had his own company. Others asked the same question, leading Davis to consider the possibility.
After all, in addition to being a master of Taekwondo, Davis worked for years on store security and asset protection.
However, he said, "I thought I'd left that all behind to focus totally on martial arts."
Then came the terrorist attacks of September 11.
"When that happened, everybody wanted to do something," Davis said.
He felt that his background and skills could help provide just a little bit more safety in a troubled world and he decided to act upon that belief.
He and Jewell, a long-time friend as well as a fellow self-defense trainer, got busy with the extensive certification process. BPS provides more than a few guys standing around in yellow shirts. They are well trained. The staff of BPS will be unarmed, but the two principals carry pistols.
Through contact with Starry Nights performer Kim Carnes, Davis is developing bodyguard work outside the Sisters area.
Event security, however, is locally focused.
"Event security came up here in Sisters," Davis said. "If we have safe, well-run events, it's good for the community."
Davis notes that his company focuses on safety as well as security and can help organizers raise their awareness of potential safety issues as Sisters' events grow.
Davis has some natural talents as a diplomat, which helps him defuse situations before they escalate into security issues.
The company will also provide self-defense training.
