Habitat provides four new homes

One of the new Habitat homes moved from Deschutes River Ranch.

Sisters Habitat for Humanity will provide homes for four more Sisters families in the coming months.

The chapter recently broke ground on two cottages at St. Helens and Larch streets that will be purchased by Linn Watson and Carole Goodman.

According to Habitat Director Sharlene Weed, this marks the first time the chapter has built homes for single people. That is not an uncommon practice for Habitat for Humanity, Weed noted.

The small, one-bedroom cottages will fit well in the quiet residential neighborhood, Weed said.

There will ultimately be three homes on the lot, two units linked by a garage and another cottage standing alone.

Volunteers have begun placing two homes donated by developers of Deschutes River Ranch and trucked into Sisters this spring.

One will be purchased by Rick and Robin Rollins, with daughters Gracie and Georgia and a baby on the way. The other will be purchased by Carrie Orlandos and her children Brian and Michelle.

Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers and donations to construct homes at affordable prices for qualifying families. The owners of the homes contribute "sweat equity," working on their homes and others and assisting the chapter in other ways.

When the current projects are completed, the Sisters chapter will have provided 22 homes in the Sisters area.
