News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Cross country runner Lindsay Chick of Sisters broke out of a training pace to take the win at the La Pine Invitational on Wednesday, October 9.
Coach Charlie Kanzig had the Outlaws running at "goal pace" since the course was only two miles instead of the usual five kilometers (3.1 miles).
Chick moved from sixth place at the mile mark to second place with 100 meters to go. With a furious kick she got past Redmond's Bonnie Pelham to claim first place in 12:58.
Anna Morton finished a strong third (13:12) and was followed by Iris Powell in ninth (13:56), Rikki Glick in 11th (14:08) and Amy Cretsinger 14th (14:17). Melissa Little finished 15th (14:19) and Amber Craigg 17th (14:22) to round out the top seven for Sisters. Seventy-seven athletes completed the course.
Resa Hodson missed the meet due to illness, allowing Redmond to nip Sisters 32-35 for the team title.
"I wanted both the girls and boys varsity runners to go through the course at a certain pace, so we weren't truly in 'race' mode," said Coach Kanzig. "I can't blame Lindsay, however, for going after the win at the end."
Alex Templar, Jordan Beck and Koby McCorkle ran a very consistent pace through the course and finished seventh (11:06), eighth (11:07) and 11th (11:16) respectively to lead the boys team to a third place finish (72 points) behind 2A champion Oakridge (58 and, La Pine (70).
Devon Pelkey continued his rapid improvement, finishing 20th (11:39), while David King was close behind in 26th (11:46) to round out the scoring for Sisters.
Nathan Church and Ben Boro battled to the chute finishing 29th (11:55) and 30th (11:56) respectively in a field of 109 finishers.
