Sisters athletes tackle Portland Marathon

Kathie Helser and Jan Reed had a great time walking the Portland Marathon.

Several Sisters athletes took on the 26-mile Portland Marathon on Saturday, October 5.

Jason Kremer, a trainer at Cascade Fitness, ran the marathon in a time of 3:47:05.

Will Carson also ran, completing his run in 3:38:06.

Rhonda Deeds ran the race in 5:12, after intensive training through Sisters Athletic Club.

"She did a fast-and-furious three months condensed version to train for it," said club owner Tate Metcalf.

"It was a blast," Deeds said.

Patty Evered turned in a fast walking time of 5:45:52.

Jan Reed and Kathie Helser walked the course at a slower pace, turning in a time of 7:04:22.

"We were doing it just to say we did it," Reed said. "(Patty) was doing it for time."

Reed said that she and Helser trained all summer for the event, walking several days a week, usually with one long walk capping the average 36-mile training week.

"Some of those training days were much harder than the marathon, actually," Reed said.

Like Deeds, Reed and Helser found the event quite enjoyable, with music and crowds and a festive air.

"The marathon was really fun," Reed said. "The day just flew by."

Reed advocates walking for fitness. She discovered that walking did more than any other activity to build up a knee that has been weak since surgery several years ago.

"Until I really started walking I was favoring it so much that it never really developed," she said. "Walking is a great thing to do."
