High school hosts Coffee House

Over 250 people attended the seventh annual Coffee House, held in the Sisters High School Cafetorium on Wednesday, November 20.

A wide variety of art exhibits and demonstrations drew people in for a closer look as they strolled through the "mini art museum." Student demos were ongoing and included acrylic painting, charcoal drawing, ceramics, jewelry making, and colored pencil tattooing.

The jazz band set the mood for the evening under the leadership of Jody Henderson. The jazz choir also performed and both were rewarded with spontaneous and enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

Vocal and instrumental soloists were featured throughout the evening, as was the local band Not All Related.

Guests bid on the silent auction items, purchased "blem" pottery and checked their tickets in hopes of winning a door prize.

Scott and Dana Shelton have attended the Coffee House for the past five years.

"The Coffee House was the first school event Dana and I ever attended," said Scott, "and now we wouldn't miss it. The first year we came we were blown away and every year it just gets better!"

Kim Addison has also been to the Coffee House many times before.

"There's always a wonderful variety of both art and music," she said. "And, it's so great to see support from the local artists, not only in donations, but mingling and talking with the kids."

"There's just so much talent!" said Kathy Lindley. "Seeing so many students involved in art and music and the quality and variety in their work is very impressive. It really attests to the high quality of teachers we have at Sisters High School."

The event raised over $1,400 and $1,000 will go toward scholarships for students who plan to major in art. The scholarships will be earmarked specifically for art supplies and materials.

Art teacher Mike Baynes said, "Each year I'm just amazed at the generous support we receive from local artists and businesses in the form of donations toward doorprizes and silent auction items."
