Community Choir offers spring concert

The Sisters Community Choir will give its seasonal spring concert this year the third weekend in March. The concert will be offered twice: Saturday, March 15, 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, 2 p.m.

The concerts will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, on North Brooks Camp Road in Sisters.

"Our March concert is a celebration of words," said director Martin Winch. "Texts take center stage. A wide range of literary periods and musical styles is represented.

"The choir will sing poems by Shakespeare, Tennyson, James Agee and Robert Frost."

Several songs by John Dowland, originally for four voices and lute, typify the complex "madrigal" style of the 16th and 17th centuries. A contrast is provided by the 20th century American composer Emma Lou Diemer in her "Three Madrigals," with words by Shakespeare set to contemporary music.

On the lighter side are two songs by current recording artists, and a rousing gospel number sure to have the audience swaying in their seats.

Individuals in the choir and special guests will also perform accompanied solos, duets and ensembles during the concert. Complementing the vocal program will be a saxophone solo by one of the choir members.

The Sisters Community Choir has been singing for more than 10 years. Most of its 18 singers live in the Sisters area, with some coming from Redmond and Bend. All singers are welcome. George Larson of Bend is Choral Director. Jane Moore of Sisters accompanies the choir on piano.

Tickets are not required and there is no admission charge. Seating is on a first-come basis. Donations placed in a basket at the door are appreciated to offset the choir's costs.
